Picking your family photos outfits got you stumped? You've finally booked your family photography session to capture some beautiful memories and get some frame-worthy portraits up on your -rather bland- walls. Then it hits you.. WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE WE GOING TO WEAR?!?
Trust me — I've been there. Sifting through what feels like endless amounts of clothes not even knowing where to begin or how to style my family for photos. That's why I have created a list of guidelines to help you make this decision a little bit easier.
Tips and Tricks for Family Photo Outfits
You ever just look at an outfit and can't decide if you love or hate it? Its probably because you love it in pieces but not as a whole. Here are a few tricks to help create cohesive– flowing outfits that allow your family to be that star of your photos.
Tip # 1 Solid Color Clothing
If you dress your children the way I do on the weekdays they probably have closets full of fun patterns & prints with their favorite character or hip slogans on them. While these can be fun & exciting for our children they can be very distracting in photos. At family photo shoots we play & have so much fun they wont even miss them!
This tip also goes for us adults too. Instead of patterns you can try using different textures. Sweaters & other knit clothing is a great way to spice up your family photo outfits.
Tip # 2 Muted Tones
You may want to leave the bright purple pants in the closet for this one. Bright colored clothing will pull your eyes away from the beautiful family memory and straight to what your clothing.
Tip #3 Color Scheme
Picking a family photo color Scheme is an essential part of the process. A group of 3 colors that go well together then dress your family within that palette. When you do this it will help ensure that your outfits flow well together. Neutral or earthy tones are often great choices.
Tip #4 Dress for the Season
It's true that what you wear for your winter or fall family photos is much different then what you will wear for your summer family session. Take into consideration the weather that your family will be outdoors in. Young girls are absolutely beautiful in long flowing dresses but if it's winter you will want to add a few under layers. Keeping your family comfortable and happy is the most important during the session.
Tip #5 Minimize Jewelry & Accessories
Your perfectly centered necklace is likely to move around during your photography session because you will be playing and having fun with your children. If it doesn't hold value to be in your photos- it's best to leave it at home. Another thing to… watch.. for is your smart watch which will often catch light and cause a reflection or generally clash with your perfectly planned and well thought out outfits.
Tip #6 Footwear & Location
Let's face it- while heels are a great option for a wedding they usually aren't the best choice for an outdoor family session. With uneven ground, going off trail & running around its best to choose a shoe that you are comfortable in. For your winter photos a nice pair of boots will keep you warm, while in summer you could get away with fully strapped sandals.
Follow Your Heart
Here's the thing though…. Coordinating outfits is an absolute art; and art-rules are made to be broken! These tips are here to help you along the way- but they are not hard and fast rules.
The most helpful thing you can do is lay out everyone's outfit on your bed to make your final decision. You will be able to see if there is something missing and see the big picture.
